Having enjoyed reading 2 other episode type storylines in the past month or so (Double Barrel: Season 1 (Zombie Thriller Series) and Yesterday's Gone: Season One) I took on chance on the 1st episode of GAMELAND. I saw that it was intended for 16+, which reads as Young Adult to me (an older adult), but the storyline deals with zombies and I am a zombie kindle junkie. This is the 1st episode of a projected 8, and it was mostly a setup story. I enjoyed reading it but was not certain if I was going to take a gamble and committ to all 8 episodes by buying into the complete collection now for a $4.49 price instead of a higher price later. But the ending of this story has swayed me to saying YES. The ending was very intense and full of action. These poor kids were on the run and the action did not let up, and of course it all leads to episode two. For an episode story, the length is pretty long, at 158 pages. Not bad for that price.

The storyline deals with a dark future for the USA and the world I assume. A big brother/1984 type situation, with zombies thrown in. I suspect this might go the way of The Running Man,Gamer or Death Race (Unrated Edition). Hi-tech hackers, zombies trapped on Long Island, and zombies being used for everything from cleaning the sewers to fighting wars. I will say that once I started reading I raced thru this story in just two days (I was also reading The Infection). It now looks like I will go "Deep into the Game" myself.

Deep Into the Game a postapocalyptic thriller series SW Tanpepper GAMELAND Book 1 eBook Saul Tanpepper Reviews

One of the things I abhor the most in series fiction is the gratuitous cliffhanger ending, designed only to get the reader to buy the next installment. And, while this book does end on a cliffhanger, I did not feel it a gratuitous one because the author warned the reader up front (and this is why it is important to read the author's notes) that these books are episodic, somewhat like the reality television formula on which it was based. Even though I was warned, I was still surprised that the book ended right in the middle of the action, and I immediately went and downloaded the next installment.

I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic fiction and the most important aspect to any sort of not-here, not-now fiction (sci fi, fantasy, etc) is internal consistency of the world, and Tanpepper has done an excellent job in creating a world that has enough throwback to the present to ground it in reality, but with enough foreign for the reader to believe that he or she is reading about an authentic possibility. Woven into this well-crafted world are characters that show that going through a zombie apocalypse isn't enough to change the fundamental nature of teenagers. So, while I did not really care for any of the characters as people (they each had their own annoying qualities), it certainly wasn't because they were poorly written.

I ended episode one wanting more of the story, and that is just about the best compliment I can give to a book that ended on a cliffhanger, which I despise. LOL Because of the subject matter and some of the descriptions, I would only recommend the book to mature readers 15+.

I'm impressed with Tanpepper's series so far. The zombie apocalypse has been done, but this is by far the most unique plot I've had the pleasure of reading.

This first episode easily kept my attention. So much so that I went to bed to read just one more chapter, and ended up finishing the book at 1 a.m. I couldn't stop reading.

From an editor's standpoint
There were a handful of issues like missing punctuation, grammatical errors like "talking it easy" instead of "taking it easy" and "drift pass" instead of "drift past." And while too many errors can distract from a story, I was too engrossed and invested in the characters to care too much about them. All I cared about was turning that electronic page and continuing to read.

I like surprises, so the prologue was a bit of a spoiler to me. I don't want to know what happens at the end of these eight episodes, but I'll go on this journey because I'm confident that there will be excitement and terrifying moments. I suppose knowing what we know before all hell breaks loose puts us in a different frame of mind as we discover new tidbits about each of the characters, why they decided to break into Gameland, and how Arc Entertainment fits into the scheme of things. I've already started reading episode two, and have no plans to stop until I've gotten to that moment where Jessie holds the gun with just one bullet.

If you like zombie apocalypse stories, I definitely recommend reading the GAMELAND series.
